ChatGPT is good at writing social media posts. What it can't do on its own is put them anywhere. It has no access to your Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn accounts, so you end up copying each caption out of the chat, downloading the image, opening your scheduler and pasting it all in again.
You can close that gap by giving ChatGPT a tool that talks to a scheduler. This guide shows how to do it with a custom GPT and Pylot, step by step, and what to watch out for.
What ChatGPT can and can't do with social media
On its own, ChatGPT can:
- Write captions, hooks and hashtags
- Plan a content calendar
- Create images
On its own, it can't:
- Log in to your social accounts
- Publish or schedule a post
- Know which accounts you have connected, or what's already in your calendar
ChatGPT's own scheduled tasks are reminders and recurring prompts that run inside ChatGPT. They don't publish anything to a social network.
To publish, ChatGPT needs an outside service that holds your social accounts and lets it create posts through an API. In a custom GPT, that connection is called an action.
How a custom GPT action works
A custom GPT is a version of ChatGPT you configure with instructions and tools. An action is a tool it can call over the web, described by an OpenAPI schema (a machine-readable list of endpoints) and secured with an API key.
When you ask the GPT "schedule this for Friday at 9am", it reads the schema, picks the right endpoint, and sends the request with your key. The scheduler does the actual posting. ChatGPT never sees your social media passwords.
Building a custom GPT needs a paid ChatGPT plan. Using one doesn't.
Step-by-step: connect ChatGPT to Pylot
Pylot publishes an OpenAPI schema for its API, so a custom GPT can use it directly. The same API powers Pylot's MCP server for Claude, Cursor and other agents.
1. Connect your social accounts in Pylot
Sign in to Pylot and connect the accounts you want to post to: Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X or TikTok. Pylot also learns your brand from your website, so captions and images come out in your voice and colours.
2. Create an API key
In Pylot, open Settings → API keys and create a key. It starts with pyl_live_. Treat it like a password: anyone with it can create posts for your business.
3. Create the GPT
In ChatGPT, create a new GPT and open the Configure tab. Give it a name, like "Our social media assistant", and short instructions:
You help create and schedule social media posts for our business using the Pylot action.
Always create posts as drafts unless I give a date and time.
Never publish immediately unless I explicitly say "publish now".
4. Add the Pylot action
Under Actions, select Create new action and import the schema from this URL:
https://www.getpylot.com/api/v1/openapi.json
Set Authentication to API key, choose Bearer as the auth type, and paste your pyl_live_ key. Save the GPT.
5. Ask for posts
Now ask the GPT for real work, not just text:
Create two Instagram posts about our new seasonal candles, each with a brand image, and schedule them for Wednesday and Saturday at noon.
The GPT asks Pylot to write captions in your brand voice, generate the images, and schedule both posts. They appear in your Pylot calendar, where you can check or change them before they go out.
Full setup details, including the exact fields, are on the Pylot for ChatGPT page.
Prompts that work well
Be specific about the platform, the topic, the timing and whether you want a draft or a scheduled post:
- "Write a Facebook post inviting people to our open day on the 14th, make a 4:5 image for it, and save it as a draft."
- "Make a LinkedIn post about our team's new certification with a brand image, and schedule it for Thursday at 9am."
- "Plan next week: three Instagram posts about our autumn menu on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 9am. Show me the captions before you schedule anything."
- "List my scheduled posts for this week."
Give the facts yourself. If there's a price, a date or an offer, put it in the prompt. Pylot's caption writer is told not to invent discounts, reviews or deadlines, but it can only use what it's given.
Keeping it safe
Letting an AI touch your social accounts sounds risky, so it's worth knowing the guardrails:
- Drafts by default. Creating a post makes a draft unless you give it a time. Nothing goes live by accident.
- Publishing needs confirmation. Publishing immediately is a separate call that requires an explicit
confirmflag. - You can revoke the key. Delete the API key in Pylot settings and the GPT loses access at once.
- Keep the GPT private. If you share a GPT that has your key, anyone using it can post to your accounts. Keep it to yourself or your team.
Other ways to schedule posts with AI
A custom GPT is the most direct route for ChatGPT users. Two alternatives:
- Claude can connect to Pylot's MCP server as a custom connector, with no schema to import. See how to post to Instagram from Claude.
- Skip the chat entirely. Pylot can write, design and schedule a month of posts on its own from your website, and you approve them in the calendar.
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT post to Instagram directly?
Not by itself. ChatGPT has no access to your Instagram account. With a custom GPT action connected to a scheduler like Pylot, it can create and schedule Instagram posts that the scheduler publishes for you.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. You copy a schema URL and paste an API key. There's no code to write.
Does it cost extra?
Creating captions, drafts and scheduled posts through the API is free on any Pylot plan. Each generated image uses 1 credit from your plan. Building the custom GPT needs a paid ChatGPT plan.
Can I use it for more than one business?
Each API key belongs to one Pylot business. For a second business, create a second key and a second GPT, so posts never end up on the wrong account.
Ready to try it? Try Pylot 7 days for $0 (card required), connect your accounts, and create your API key under Settings.
